How does shipping work? What about summer shipping?
We ship Monday through Thursday to ensure your chocolate doesn't spend the weekend in transit. All orders ship via USPS Priority Mail, which typically delivers within 2-3 business days.
During warm months (May through September), we use insulated packaging with ice packs to protect your chocolate. Summer shipping has an additional $5 fee to cover these materials. While this might seem high, it's essential for delivering your chocolate in perfect condition. Our chocolates are sometimes not available in the USA during the summer, so stock up and freeze them earlier in the year.
How can I track my order?
You'll receive a shipping confirmation email with your USPS tracking number as soon as your order ships. You can click the tracking link in that email or copy your tracking number to the USPS website to monitor your delivery.
Haven't received your tracking information within 2 business days of ordering? Check your spam folder first, then contact us with your order number if you still need assistance.
Do you ship internationally?
Currently, we only ship within the continental United States. We're working on expanding our shipping capabilities while ensuring our chocolate arrives in perfect condition. That said, we can sometimes accommodate individual requests. Please contact us to see what we can do for you.
What's your return policy?
While we can't accept returns of perishable food items, we want you to be completely satisfied with your purchase.
If your chocolate arrives damaged or you have concerns about its condition, please photograph the chocolate and packaging within 24 hours of delivery and contact us immediately. We'll make it right.
For non-chocolate items (t-shirts, merchandise, etc.), we accept returns within 30 days of purchase in original, unused condition.
Can I change or cancel my order?
Orders can be modified or canceled within 2 hours of placement since we prepare shipments quickly to ensure freshness. After that window, we may have already started processing your order.
Need to make a change? Email us immediately with your order number and requested changes. While we can't guarantee changes after the 2-hour window, we'll do our best to accommodate your request if the order hasn't shipped.
Do you offer wholesale pricing
Yes, but please note the following: while we do sometimes partner with specialty food shops, chocolate boutiques, and high-end grocers who share our values of quality, sustainability, and transparent trade, our chocolates are best kept frozen for long-term storage. They have a 6-week shelf life otherwise, due to the traditional Tz’utujil preparation process.
We have found ways to make this work with some wholesale customers. If you’re interested and would like to discuss in more detail, please use our Contact Form and we will get back to you within 1-2 business days.
Do you offer private chocolate tastings and educational events?
Absolutely! Over the years our USA Director, Nico, has led a variety of experiences related to chocolate and cacao over the years. These include:
- Lectures and workshops at chocolate festivals
- Online chocolate tastings as fundraisers for nonprofit organizations
- Employee & client appreciation events for businesses
- Pairing events at breweries and hard apple cider makers
Contact us with any questions and ideas, and we will respond within 1-2 business days. It’s fun for groups of all sizes.
Where is your chocolate made?
Every Diego's Chocolate roll is crafted in San Pedro la Laguna, in Guatemala's western highlands.
Our cacao comes from Izabal; grown by Kampura Farm. Unlike most chocolate companies who process cacao far from its origin, we make our chocolate right here in Guatemala where it’s grown. This 'bean-to-roll' approach at origin creates more local jobs, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, ensures quality control, and maintains the traditions of Tz'utujil chocolate-making.
Our small facility employs local artisans who hand-roll each chocolate using traditional methods passed down through generations. By making chocolate at origin, we keep more value in Guatemala's indigenous communities while delivering uniquely fresh flavors to your door.
What makes Diego's Chocolate different from other chocolates?
Three key things set us apart:
First, we're made at origin in Guatemala. Most companies buy their cacao from global south countries and process it elsewhere. We keep the entire chocolate-making process in Guatemala, supporting local communities, reducing carbon emissions and maintaining freshness.
Second, our unique roll format. Every chocolate is hand-rolled using traditional Tz'utujil methods. This labor-intensive process creates more jobs while delivering a chocolate experience you can't find anywhere else.
Third, our simple ingredient philosophy. We use just cacao, unrefined sugar, and fresh orange juice as our base. We add only local, carefully-sourced ingredients for flavored varieties. No lecithin, no artificial additives – just pure, real chocolate the way it was meant to taste.
Why does your chocolate come in rolls instead of bars?
Our roll format connects directly to Guatemala's chocolate-making heritage. Before chocolate was ever tempered and molded into bars, the Maya prepared cacao for drinking. Diego thought, why not do something a bit different? His results are a modern Mayan twist on thousand-year old knowledge.
Local families all have their own unique preparation methods. Diego learned key techniques from his grandmother. She in turn, learned it from her own grandmother, and so on.
Beyond preserving tradition, hand-rolling creates jobs that would otherwise be done by machines. It also allows us to incorporate whole ingredients like cardamom pods and orange pith in a way that industrial molding can't match (we think!).
The roll format might seem unusual at first, but it's actually chocolate returning a bit closer to its roots – and our customers tell us they love this unique connection to chocolate's origins as well as the soft, enjoyable texture.
Can I visit your facility in Guatemala?
Yes, you can! Artesanal Chocolate Diego (our name in Spanish) has two retail locations in Sololá, Guatemala. On the western edge of Lake Atitlan, you can find us in San Juan la Laguna, and San Pedro la Laguna.
When you arrive at either one of our stores, you will be treated to a traditional chocolate-making demonstration. Try your skills at grinding cacao and sugar on our family’s generations-old metate (volcanic stone grinder), and then taste the results! Our staff will educate you on all things related to Mayan chocolate. Please note, English is not spoken at either location.
Both of our shops also offer a wider selection of chocolate rolls than available in the USA, as well as many other related products including local, handwoven clothing and accessories.
You can also experience our chocolate-making heritage through our private tasting events held regularly in the United States. Contact us to find out more.
For wholesale partners and educational institutions interested in facility visits, please contact us directly to discuss arrangements."
